Cave Adit Closure
MCS completed this design/build project for the reclamation
of an adit that accessed a limestone cavern complex.
The work included a site investigation to evaluate potential improvements to the
road and to the collapsed adit, which provides access
to the cave. The investigation consisted of an
engineering survey to map the access roads, adit portal,
and entrance into the collapsed adit to map geologic
conditions. Several remedial options were evaluated,
with the chosen option providing site accessibility,
public safety, and cave protection from both vandals
and natural causes.
MCS also prepared a site investigation report included
design quality drawings of the proposed reclamation.
Site reclamation work included upgrading the entrance
road, clearing the portal
area and adit collapse, shoring of the adit with rock
bolting and steel sets, constructing an outer security
door and an airtight inner door, and grading and revegetation
of disturbed areas. Future work will include assistance
with a management plan for the cave and development
of a trail and trailhead system. |
