MCS performed an abandoned mine reclamation and stream
restoration along approximately 1,400 feet of Spring
Creek, a tributary to the upper Clark Fork River near
Deerlodge, Montana. The project was a Comprehensive
Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
removal action designed by CDM Federal Programs
to eliminate Clean Water Act violations. MCS removed
approximately 11,000 cy of mill tailings from
the channel and floodplain and placed them in an MCS-built
engineered repository. The project required installation
of about 5,000 lf of silt fencing with straw bales to
protect undisturbed sections of the creek.
Since the
creek is a spawning tributary for the endangered species
listed Westslope cutthroat trout, it required extensive
runoff and erosion control work to prevent impact from
snowmelt and summer thunder storms at its high elevation
(6,500 feet). No violations or releases occurred throughout
the project. During the course of the removal, MCS

temporarily diverted the creek in some reaches and constructed up to the streambank in others; |

placed a geocomposite liner and drainage fabric and compacted a backfill and topsoil repository cap; |

reconstructed the floodplain with backfill from the repository and topsoil from a nearby source; |
● |
seeded, mulched, and fertilized all disturbed areas and fenced the 25 acres until vegetation was established; and |
● |
abandoned four monitoring wells
to
Montana Department of Environmental Quality standards.
