This US Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District (USACE) military construction contract required the removal of 12 buildings, including: one fuel transfer shed, one PX type structure, six two-story barracks buildings, three modular structures, and one single story armory building for a total of 47,392 sf. Two modular structures were sold and moved to an educational facility in NW Washington. Seven 1000-gallon diesel fuel oil underground storage tanks were removed.
The Corps’ C & D waste diversion goal for this project was 75%. MCS used building removal strategies which recovered the highest possible yield of reusable materials. As a result, the project was completed within budget and with no change orders. The project closed the gap even further between traditional demolition (crush and haul) and the deconstruction alternative used in this project. At completion, MCS diverted more than 95% of the 2,500 tons of potential demolition.
