Under the direction of the USACE Seattle District and the USAF 341st Environmental Wing, MCS demolished forty-six re-locatable family housing foundations at the Malmstrom Air Force Base. This work was a part of the USAF’s ongoing efforts to divert construction waste away from disposal at a local landfill and reuse the materials in an economically productive manner. All concrete footers, walls, driveways, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and garage pads were demolished and concrete waste was stockpiled on the base. This waste was then prepared with a hydraulic breaker and crushed to 1½ minus for use as road sub-base material and rebar was recycled. Utilities were capped at the horizontal run below grade. Fill material was placed and compacted at the job site while all crushed material was stockpiled. Approximately 8800 tons of waste was diverted from the landfill under this contract which resulted in $325,000 cost savings if traditional demolition and waste disposal had been utilized.
