MCS was contracted by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District to move a 3,500 sf WWII-era, wood-framed chapel from North Fort Lewis to the Sequalitchew Eco Park. The contract includes abatement of hazardous materials within the chapel and, to illustrate the value of existing resources, remodeling the structure as the Environmental Education and Conference Center. This Center will be the training and community facility and interpretive center for Fort Lewis’s Eco Park – a former landfill being developed into an exposition of natural habitat, resource conservation and reuse, waste diversion, and sustainable design.
Sustainable and durable construction products and material systems are being used for the chapel renovation that will meet or exceed the following goals:
● |
Reduced building life-cycle costs |
● |
Reduced operational costs (energy efficiencies and low maintenance requirements, durable materials, reduced degradation) |
● |
Extended service life of the facility and its components (more durable, reduced degradation) |
● |
Seismically retrofitted structure meeting current life safety standards |
